“Trafficking in persons,” “human trafficking,” and “modern slavery” are used as umbrella terms to refer to both sex trafficking and compelled labor. Modern Slavery is a pressing issue on an upward spiral. Compared with the historical slavery, the modern version is in a more discreet and intractable disguise.

United States Department of State gives the below description of Modern Slavery.

  • Sex Trafficking.

  • Child Sex Trafficking.

  • Forced Labor.

  • Bonded Labor or Debt Bondage.

  • Domestic Servitude.

  • Forced Child Labor.

According to the International Labour Organization, Walk Free and the International Organization for Migration, latest estimates (circa 2022) show that 50 million people worldwide were trapped in modern slavery. Of these people, 28 million were in forced labour and 22 million were trapped in forced marriage. The number of people in modern slavery has risen significantly in the last five years. 10 million more people were in modern slavery in 2021 compared to 2016 global estimates. Women and children remain disproportionately vulnerable. The whole of society must join hands to reverse the trends and protect the vulnerable communities.
